Doralee was a teacher who also acted as a nurse in an isolated town of hill-folk on Jiangyin. She was a deeply religious Christian and at first was very kind to Simon Tam and his sister River Tam, who had been kidnapped for the town by Stark. Doralee welcomed the Tams and tried to convince Simon that this would be their new home.
When she learned that River Tam had psychic abilities after reading the mind of a mute girl, Doralee called the town people to kill her for being a witch. She rang the town bell despite Simon's attempts to reason with her, and after River angered the town patron, the townsfolk prepared to burn both Tams alive. The siblings were rescued by the Serenity crew.
