Zoe holding new born Emma, surrounded by the crew

Nine months after the discovery of Miranda, the crew's outing of it, as well as her father's death, Emma Washburne was born in Serenity's infirmary. Delivered by resident medic, Simon Tam, she was born healthy and was promptly named Emma by her mother -- although Zoe first did joke about naming the baby Hoban after Emma's late father. Unfortunately, Emma's birth arrived with complications, specifically internal bleeding for Zoe.

After Zoe is left behind at the hospital, the crew (mostly Kaylee and Inara) switch off caring for her. She sleeps in Kaylee and Simon's bunk.

Zoe and Simon traveled with her for a time, and although River liked helping with Emma, Zoe told her to stay away after she was “activated” again. Later the crew flew through a portal to Earth-That-Was. Emma was a toddler then and she took a liking to Wash bot because it was a replica of her father.

20 years later, young adult Emma pilots Serenity with her mom as Captain. Emma has her mother’s stubbornness and toughness with her father’s skills at flying and she wears a shirt like his. She and her mom are often at odds, with Zoe saying Emma doesn’t understand what it takes to keep the ship flying. Things are a bit better, though, after a conflict with Blue Sun

Behind the scenes[]

  • Zoe's pregnancy isn't a new concept to the Firefly 'verse. In fact, Zoe has appeared very pregnant in the previous comics Float Out and It's Never Easy.
  • Zack Whedon (writer of Serenity: Leaves on the Wind) discussed on the matter of Emma's name that: "“I just remember [the name Emma] feeling appropriate to the world of ‘Firefly’ and ‘Serenity,’ " Whedon said. "I wanted something that just felt sort of lovely and unaffected by all the terrible things that these people have gone through. Something pure.”
